Winter Solstice journaling

A solstice altar, made at my Mindful Solstice event

The Winter Solstice falls on 21st December in 2024 and is the official start of winter. Known as ‘the longest night’ it is when the northern hemisphere experiences the least amount of daylight, after which the light slowly begins to return. Themes connected to this time are: gifting, feasting, rest, candles (& lights in general), hope & rebirth.

The solstice is has been celebrated around the world for thousands of years (for more history click here) and is the perfect time to pause and reflect. I recommend going for a winter walk first, noticing the bare branches and evergreens of the season. Then, cosy up with a blanket, hot drink and your journal for some end of year reflections.

Winter solstice journal prompts

In this season of slow, what might you need to do less of or say no to? And what will this space allow for you instead of busyness and doing?

Philosopher Albert Camus said “In the depth of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer”... What gives you strength and resilience in dark times? Who do you need by your side? What qualities and skills do you possess that will help you be ‘invincible’? What do you need to do and where do you need to go to keep your inner light burning brightly?

What can you do this winter to bring light and warmth to others?

What gift would you most like to receive & why? This could be a physical item or an experience.

What are the ‘evergreen’ elements of your life - things that need to be present all year round for your health & wellbeing?
